Cocktails & Casas: Mulholland Ranch & The Autumn Negroni

As autumn settles across the canyons, the light softens, the air cools, and the rhythm of life slows into something more intentional. In this special Thanksgiving edition of Cocktails & Casas, we head inland to the heart of Malibu ranch country—a place of quiet grandeur, graceful architecture, and deep-rooted calm.

Muholland Ranch, Malibu California

Set on 28 acres of pristine Malibu ranchland, Mulholland Ranch is a home that embraces stillness. Framed by mature oaks and sycamores, the estate feels timeless—an elegant Spanish-style residence that balances structure and serenity. The remodel honored its historic character while introducing modern functionality and flow, including a reimagined master suite and a luminous kitchen that captures the soft California light.

Interiors by Martyn Lawrence Bullard infuse the space with English Colonial charm: a palette of warm woods, soft textiles, and collected antiques that feel both worldly and deeply personal. Every detail feels intentional—from the carved beams to the handwoven rugs—and yet nothing feels staged. It’s a home designed to be lived in, celebrated, and shared.

The landscape beyond continues that dialogue of balance—formal courtyards meet wild grasses, and shaded terraces open to wide pastoral views. It’s a place where time slows and gratitude comes naturally.

🍁 The Autumn Negroni

To complement Mulholland Ranch’s layered warmth and Spanish revival elegance, we’re mixing up The Autumn Negroni—a rich, spiced interpretation of the classic cocktail that pairs perfectly with the season.

Why it works:

Like the home, this drink is both grounded and refined. The deep amber hues reflect the sun setting through the sycamores, while the flavor—slightly bitter, warmly spiced, and beautifully aromatic—echoes the complexity of a house built on heritage and heart.

🥃 The Autumn Negroni Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz gin (preferably barrel-aged or botanical-forward)
  • 1 oz sweet vermouth
  • 1 oz Campari
  • ¼ oz allspice dram or cinnamon-spiced simple syrup (optional, for depth)
  • Orange peel and star anise for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Stir gin, vermouth, and Campari with ice until well-chilled.
  2. Strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube.
  3. Add the optional touch of spiced syrup or allspice dram for warmth.
  4. Express an orange peel over the glass and garnish with star anise.

It’s the perfect fireside sip—familiar, but unexpected.

🌾 Final Sip

Mulholland Ranch embodies gratitude in architectural form: a home rooted in history, reimagined with care, and made to gather in. The Autumn Negroni mirrors that same spirit—layered, classic, and touched with spice.

Here’s to homes that hold us, to tables filled with laughter, and to moments that remind us what we’re thankful for.

Up next: we head back to the hills for a story of stone, art, and architecture in perfect harmony. Until then—cheers.
