The Flying Nun, Malibu California
Originally designed by Harry Gesner, the Flying Nun’s iconic sculptural roofline was celebrated and expanded through renovations and additions by Hayne Architects. Robbin and Hillary Hayne added two bedrooms, refinished wood floors, reclad the fireplace in stone, and introduced custom furnishings that balance function with the home’s playful, architectural character.
At the heart of the home, the great room—anchored by soaring windows and a striking fireplace—became a luminous, inviting gathering space. Hillary Hayne’s Bohemian Chic interiors layered texture, color, and eclectic charm throughout, enhancing both the family’s lifestyle and the home’s original architectural spirit. Though lost in the 2018 Woolsey Fire, the project remains a study in honoring design heritage while expanding livability.
