Tales from the Construction Site: The “Would You Rather” Edition

Construction projects rarely go exactly as planned. Even with the most meticulous drawings and thorough planning, unforeseen conditions pop up, requiring on-the-spot problem-solving and a healthy dose of creativity. As we find ourselves knee-deep in construction administration on our Locker Room project, we’ve encountered a fair share of these moments — and they got us thinking… Would you rather?

DUCTS VERSUS SOFFITS

Would you rather have exposed ductwork or soffits everywhere? Exposed ductwork has a certain industrial charm, giving spaces a raw, modern edge. But soffits can hide a multitude of sins (and mechanical systems) while offering a cleaner look. Which would you pick when faced with unexpected HVAC surprises?

TRIM VERSUS IMPERFECTIONS

Would you rather add trim to a modern interior to mask inconsistencies in materials or keep the uneven joints exposed? Modern interiors are all about clean lines and simplicity, but sometimes material inconsistencies or existing conditions throw a wrench in those perfect joints. Would you embrace the imperfections as part of the story or add trim to keep things looking crisp?

MORE QUANTITY VERSUS LESS QUALITY

Would you rather show up and see a zillion new recessed cans in your pristine wood ceilings or find Ikea-style cabinets when you paid for custom woodwork? Lighting and cabinetry are make-or-break details. Discovering a sea of recessed cans can be a gut punch when you envisioned a warm, understated glow. But is that worse than opening a cabinet door and realizing your custom wood cabinetry dreams have been swapped for off-the-shelf solutions?

WRONG, BUT RIGHT VERSUS RIGHT, BUT WRONG

Would you rather see the wrong plants planted in the right spot or the right plants planted in the wrong spots? Landscaping can make or break curb appeal. Is it more frustrating to see a beautifully balanced design filled with the wrong species or a jumble of misplaced plants that happen to be exactly what you specified?

CONSTANT CONTACT VERSUS THE SILENT TREATMENT

Would you rather have a contractor that constantly goes rogue and makes executive decisions or one that asks a bazillion questions? A proactive contractor can be a godsend — until their “creative liberties” clash with your vision. On the other hand, constant check-ins can slow things down but ensure everything aligns with the plan. Which is the lesser evil?

Every project presents its own unique set of challenges, and navigating these “would you rather” scenarios is all part of the fun (and frustration) of construction. What would you choose? Let us know your thoughts — and stay tuned for more tales from the construction site!
